A Brief History of ĺRÁSOS

ĺrásos of Kalotaszeg is the representative stitch of Transylvanian Hungarian culture.

Originally there were two types of stitch, one is Kis ĺrásos (plain chain stitch), and another is “nagy ĺrásos” (opened chain stitch). “Nagy ĺrásos” remains until today.

In old times, it is embroidered so thickly that there is very little space between each motif. However in early 20th century, Gyarmathy Zsigáné, one of Kalotaszegs women had reformed it to the present form in order to make it more popular.

As the word “ĺr” means to write or to draw, it is an important step to draw the patterns. There are a few patternmakers in each village who draw the ĺrásos patterns for order. In that way, the motifs had been enriched; also the patterns had been polished. (Tanizaki Seiko)
